Yoga Master Stuart Kirton recently joined us in the Expresso studio for a demonstration of Ashtanga Yoga.

Ashtanga Yoga is seen as a modern day version of classical Indian yoga, it was popularised by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois after being passed down to him by his Guru, Rama Mohan Brahmachari. Shri K. Pattabhi Jois established the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute by 1948, in India. It is named after after the eight limbs of yoga, as according to philosophy there are eight aspects of yoga.

It’s a practice and philosophy that’s meant to help develop psychological, physical and spiritual strength. It is a flowing sequence of postures matched with specific breathing techniques, to develop strength, flexibility and a calm clarity of the mind for more meditative quantities.

The primary series in Ashtanga Yoga isYoga Chikitsa (yoga therapy), is to detoxify and realign the body. This is all done through synchronizing your breath with a series of progressive postures. It’s a process to produce intense internal heat in abundant, to purify sweat and detoxify organs, which results in improved circulation.
