Cottage Pie
Serves 10
Ingredients:
- 500 g ostrich or lean beef mince
- 2 Tbs olive oil
- 2 medium onions, chopped
- 1 pack (250g) button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 grated carrots
- 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
- 2 Tbs tomato paste
- 2 Tbs Vital Original Soy Sauce
- Freshly ground pepper to taste
- 2 tins lentils, fluid drained
- 1 handful freshly chopped parsley
- 1 Tbs fresh thyme
- 1 Tbs cake flour
- 1 Tbs olive oil
- 8 large potatoes, peeled and cooked (for variety, combine 4 potatoes with 4 sweet potatoes)
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup finely grated parmesan cheese
- Nutmeg added to taste
Method:
- Preheat oven to 180°C.
- In a large non-stick pan, brown ostrich or lean beef mince in 1 Tbs olive oil. Remove from pan. Sauté onions in 1 Tbs olive oil until golden brown.
- Add mushrooms and sauté until lightly browned. Add carrots, celery, and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Add cooked mince and lentils to vegetables, stir in Vital Original Soy Sauce and tomato paste, season with pepper and cook for another 5 minutes.
- Stir in parsley, thyme, and salt.
- In a mixing bowl, mash potatoes with milk, adding in parmesan cheese. Season to taste with salt, freshly ground pepper and nutmeg.
- Transfer meat mixture into an oven proof baking dish and smooth with a spatula. Top with mashed potatoes and bake at 20-30 minutes.
- Serve with fresh side salad.
