Crochet with Josie Borain
Crochet is the art of creating fabric by pulling loops of yarn or thread through other loops with the aid of a crochet hook.
Starting with a simple chain as a foundation, various stitches are added until the crocheted piece has basically been built upon itself.
Crochet can be worked in rows or rounds with stunning results.
The Chain Stitch
This is the most basic of all crochet stitches and will be used in several different ways.
Chain stitches are used to begin most crochet projects.
A group of chain stitches used at the start of a project can also be referred to as a "starting chain", "base chain" or "foundation chain".
Begin with a slipknot.
Make a loop and hook another loop through it.
Tighten gently and slide knot up.
Wrap yarn from back onto the front of the hook or manoeuvre the hook keeping yarn still.
Draw the hooked yarn through the loop on the hook to form another loop.
This is your first chain.
Make 150 chains.
The Turning Chain.
After you've worked a row of crochet you need to turn the piece over and work back across.
The turning chain, helps you to achieve the correct height for your next row of stitches.
Make three chains.
These will make up the first Treble Crochet in the next row.
Yarn over and insert the hook underneath the top of the loop of the fourth chain from the hook.
Yarn over again and draw through the work.
You now have 3 loops on your hook.
Yarn over again and pull through 2 of the loops on your hook.
That will leave 2 loops on the hook.
Yarn over again.
Yarn over again and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
You have now completed a Treble Crochet Stitch.
The loop left on your hook is your starting point for the next stitch.
Work a Treble Crochet into every chain through to last chain.
Work 2 trebles into the last loop of the row.
Turn work, chain 3 to begin next row of trebles.
Repeat as many rows in colours of your choice.
What to do with the tails/ends.
Leave a tails in both colours of at least 4 inches which you will either weave in or crochet over as you work the new row.
