Down to Earth Farm Feasts

It was while planning a wedding that Dany Kranauw first came across Outstanding in the Field, an American initiative that serves meals outdoors on farms in California. Enthralled by the images of long white tables set in the midst of green farm fields, Dany paired up with her best friend, Danielle Strydom, to launch Down to Earth Farm Feasts in Gauteng. Along with their cute truck they venture onto a beautiful farm and serve dinner made from farm fresh ingredients to 70 guests while the sun sets. 

"Danielle and I (Dany) have been best friends forever and as soon as we had our first brainstorming session about Down to Earth-farm feasts we immediately realized that not only do we compliment each other as friends, but also as potential business partners. For years we dreamt about the amazing projects that we would love to do or become part of and this venture, although very young still, truly is a dream come true to us. We are thankful for the experience every day.

We drew our inspiration from a project in America called “Outstanding in the field”. The project consists of a group of people, amongst others, a very creative chef, his group of helpers and food enthusiasts who travel to various communities, searching for and discovering passionate farmers and interesting farms.  The chef creates an original menu daily, based on the seasonal and available produce from the farms.

What started out as a very romantic notion on our journey became educational as we started visiting the interesting producers and farmers in and around Gauteng. We truly started realizing that terms such as “organic”, “free range” and “natural” holds much more value than the more popular marketing angle we are so used to these days.

The goal of Down to Earth – farm fasts is not only to reconnect people to the origins of the food that we eat, but also to realize the importance of the quality of produce and appreciate and support the individuals and organizations that embrace this philosophy.

Our charming mobile kitchen and dining table set up allow us to create spectacular dining experiences in unconventional spaces, such greenhouses, amongst strawberry patches or community gardens overlooking the contrasting rushed city life. One large communal table is set and people who arrive as strangers leave as friends."
