Earthworm Farm

1: What is an earthworm farm?
Essentially it’s a home composting system which using earthworms to process kitchen waste into valuable organic fertilizer for your garden

2: What is the benefit of having an EWF?

- It’s a way of keep our own bins and landfill sites much cleaner
- It’s a way of producing the highest quality compost & liquid fertilizer and thus Blooming plants!
- it’s a way of promoting healthier soil: this is achieved by earthworms by creating small tunnels where air and water can move through the soil, by producing huge amounts of humus, by increasing micro-organism populations.


3: Can viewers use any worms or are these 'Special' Earthworms?
There are over 3000 varieties of earthworm in the world - they all do important work, but there are really only TWO suitable for this kind of farming.
Generally we call them red wigglers (for obvious reasons).
They are top feeders and reproduce very quickly. A healthy adult can produce up to 1000 worms in a year.


4: What do they need to be happy/productive?
Food -  requirements
water - damp/moist
air - well aerated
temperature - in the 20's
Ph - balanced / neutral  - ideally 7

5: What can / do we GET from EWFing?
Liquid fertilizer and vericastings/compost 

6: Is this the only kind or Are there different kinds of farm systems?
There are a variety of systems. One of my favourite alternatives to this 3 bin system is a bath system, but there are many and it’s easy to make your own using tires, crates, buckets....
