Expresso Kitchen Makeover

Expresso's studio has been made over by Andy De Klerk Cabinet Works. The design is more functional and environmentally friendly. We spoke to senior designer Warren Franken:

Where did you get the inspiration for this type of design?
A: - woodwork work Bench concept
    -  in the kitchen, practical environment
    - easy to locate items in the kitchen

Q: Tell us about the shape and layout of this kitchen?
A: - Traditional style of ADK Cabinetworks combined with European contemporary
    - Warmth of the bamboo and satin finishes
    - Heart of a home is the kitchen
    - space to cook easily and entertain at the same time
    - will work in small and large spaces
    - position of utility cupboard

Q: What's unique about this design?
A: - The Paperstone working space in between the hobs
    - about the Paperstone
    - Bamboo prep bowl below cutting board ( show )
    - Satin glass drawer fronts to locate items in the drawers
    - Close up utility cupboard doors to create a clean space

Green aspects:

  1. Bamboo tops

   - Carbonised strand woven bamboo
   - most sustainable material and grows quicker than any other hard wood
   - oiled to bring out the natural beauty of the wood
   - carcass is also bamboo

   2. Second.Life tops
  - 89% recycled stone

  - waste collected within a 500km radius from the factory
  - product undergoes a quarterly analysis to ensure all environmental aspects are maintained at

the highest standard during the manufacturing process.
  - durability and aesthetic appeal is of highest standard and not compromised during processing
  - honed and sealed for warmer natural look
  - the product is available in 5 neutral colours, determined by the natural colour of the stone waste (chalk, sand, ash, clay and charcoal)
  - suitable for bathroom and kitchen tops, wall cladding and flooring
  - we have implemented water and waste recycling systems in our factory as we feel it is an important way to move forward in our industry.

   3. Recycle Bin system

- on prep side where it is easily accessible

  - one compartment for general waste: items that you cannot recycle
  - second compartment for recycling: plastic, tin metal
  - important tip to remember is all items must be washed and dried before it is placed into the bin to prevent it from smelling
  - all waste is taken to recycling plants where it is sorted by local communities. This is a bonus as it creates employment.
