Charles Standing is an enthusiastic urban forager, who goes by the name of The Urban Hunter Gatherer and lurks in Cape Town, South Africa. He is passionate about cooking regional food from his local environment.
Together with photographer Ian Manson, Charlie has been working on a cookbook. It was all rather random to start off with, but once the title 'The Urban Hunter Gatherer' was decided on, it has become more focussed. The book is a combination of recipes, philosophies, stories and of course heaps of splendid pictures.
At the request of the exclusive Mount Nelson Hotel, Charlie has teamed up with his old mate Ian Freemantle from Cape Adventure Zone to form a 'foodie package', which includes a day of foraging in and around Cape Town followed by a multi course meal using the foraged bounty at The Chefs Table. The meal will be prepared by the renowned head chef, Rudi Liebenburg. Also in the pipeline, a culinary Township Tour and a tour that will visit a number of innovative urban micro farmers and suppliers who are growing and processing a variety of produce right in heart of the city of Cape Town.
