How To Make
Chakalaka Round Layered Bread with Mushrooms, Cheese, and Ham
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Grease a round cake pan or a loaf pan.
Prepare the dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, spicy steak and chops spice, ground cumin, black pepper, spice of rice, dried Italian herbs, and mixed herbs.
- Gradually add lukewarm water and olive oil to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined to form a dough.
- Knead the dough lightly until it is smooth and elastic. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
Prepare the Chakalaka Mix:
- In a separate pan, combine the chakalaka, white button mushrooms, French chives, fresh rosemary, and crushed garlic and chilli.
- Cook the mixture over medium heat until the mushrooms are tender, and the flavours are well combined. Set aside to cool slightly.
Assemble the bread:
- Divide the dough into small, bite-sized portions.
- Layer the dough portions in the prepared pan, starting with a layer of dough, followed by the chakalaka mix, slices of smoked ham, and a sprinkle of both Gouda and Cheddar cheese.
- Repeat the layering process until the pan is filled, ending with a layer of dough on top.
Bake:
- Place the assembled bread in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown on top and a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
Cool and serve:
- Remove the bread from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
- Transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Once cooled, slice and serve garnished with micro herbs and a side of smokey onion and mustard cream cheese.
