Deep Fried Blooming Onions

If you like crispy fried onion rings, then you will absolutely love these baby blooming fried onions.

Serves: 3-4
Time: 15 minutes
Recipe by: Thando Manyoni

Ingredients:

8-10 baby onions
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg
1 cup flour
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp dried oregano
Salt and pepper to taste
Oil for frying
Sauce or dip of choice for serving

Method:

Mix flour, garlic powder, paprika, dried oregano in a bowl and season with salt and pepper.
To prep the onions, carefully cut off the small end of the stem. Place the onion cut side up and make a cross-cut through the onion, leaving the bottom stem intact. Continue cross cutting through the onion until you have a few evenly spaced cuts through each onion. Gently separate the outer layers.
Whisk the egg and milk in a bowl. Dunk the onions into the flour mixture, ensuring to coat each layer, then into the egg mixture and back into the flour.
Heat the oil and deep fry them until golden and crispy. Drain on paper towel. Serve with sauce or dip of choice.

Chefs Tip: Soaking the onions in milk or buttermilk overnight would yield best results.
If you don’t want to deep fry, airfrying will work just as well.
