How To Make Homemade Scented Candles Made From Upcycled Milk Cartons

  1. Prepare the Milk Carton Mold:
    • Clean and dry the milk cartons thoroughly.
    • Cut the top off the carton to create an open mold. You can trim the carton to your desired height for the candle.
  2. Set Up the Wick:
    • Place the wick at the centre of the carton. Use a wick holder or a pencil laid across the top of the carton to keep the wick cantered and upright.
    • Make sure the wick touches the bottom of the carton and is secured in place.
  3. Melt the Wax:
    • Using a double boiler or a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, melt the candle wax slowly. Stir occasionally until fully melted.
  4. Add Scents and Spices:
    • Once the wax is fully melted, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly.
    • Add essential oils for fragrance, stirring well to distribute the scent evenly.
    • If desired, mix in ground spices like cinnamon or cloves for a warm, cozy scent.
  5. Pour the Wax:
    • Carefully pour the melted wax into the prepared milk carton mold. Fill it up to your desired level, leaving a small gap at the top.
    • Gently tap the carton to release any air bubbles.
  6. Let the Candle Set:
    • Allow the wax to cool and harden completely. This may take several hours or overnight.
    • As the wax cools, it may shrink slightly. If necessary, you can top it off with more melted wax to create a smooth surface.
  7. Unmold the Candle:
    • Once the candle is fully set, carefully peel away the milk carton to reveal your candle. If needed, use scissors or a box cutter to assist with removing the carton.
  8. Trim the Wick:
    • Trim the wick to about ¼ inch above the surface of the candle.
  9. Optional Decoration:
    • Decorate the candle with ribbons, tags, or other embellishments as desired.
  10. Enjoy Your Candle:
    • Light your candle and enjoy the cozy ambiance it brings to your space!
