Crispy Fried Calamari

Light, golden, and tender with just the right crunch!

Serves: 2 – 4
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

For the fish:

  • 500g Calamari
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

To serve:

  • Pickled Fish
  • Fresh salad
  • Tartar sauce
  • Hot cross buns
  • Fresh coriander
  • Lime wedges

How To Make Crispy Fried Calamari

  1. Start by preparing the sauce, add all ingredients into a bowl and mix until well combined.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together 3/4 cup flour, baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Slowly pour in cold sparkling water while whisking until smooth.
  4. Lightly dredge the Calamari pieces in plain flour first (helps batter stick).
  5. Dip each piece into the sparkling water batter, coating fully.
  6. Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat.
  7. Fry the battered calamari for 2 – 3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towel.
  9. To assemble the platter, place Calamari into a serving bowl and serve with Tartar sauce and lemon wedges.
  10. Place all the other items onto the board and serve immediately.
