Elevate Your Store-Bought Cake

A quick go to for your festive desserts!

Ingredients:

  • 1 store-bought cake – preferably vanilla or baked cheesecake
  • 1 ½ cups pre-made buttercream or creamcheese frosting
  • Fresh rosemary sprigs
  • ¼ cup water
  • ¼ cup white sugar (plus extra for dusting)
  • Oranges, lemons, or limes (thinly sliced)
  • Baking paper
  • Optional: a sprinkle of sugar for extra shine

How To Make Elevate Your Store-Bought Cake

Candied Rosemary Hack:

  1. Make a simple syrup: In a small saucepan, heat equal parts sugar and water until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  3. Dip the rosemary: Dip each rosemary sprig into the syrup, shaking off any excess.
  4. Coat with sugar: Sprinkle or roll the syrup-coated sprigs in extra sugar until evenly covered.
  5. Dry: Lay on baking paper or a wire rack for 30–45 minutes until crisp and frosty.
  6. Hack: If you’re in a hurry, pop them into the fridge for 10–15 minutes — the cold air helps the sugar set faster!

Dehydrated Citrus Hack Slice thinly:

  1. Cut your citrus into thin, even rounds — about 3mm thick.
  2. Lay & bake: Arrange on a lined baking tray and bake at 90–100°C (low and slow) for 2–3 hours, turning halfway, until dry and lightly golden.
  3. Cool & store: Let them cool completely before storing in an airtight jar.
  4. Hacks: Speed it up: Use an air fryer or dehydrator at 80–90°C for about 1 hour — faster, same beautiful result.
  5. Flavour twist: Brush slices with a little honey or maple syrup before drying for a glossy, caramelised look.
  6. Decor idea: Arrange a few dehydrated orange slices with candied rosemary and raspberries on top of your cheesecake for a festive wreath effect.
