How To Make Campfire Apple Crumble

  1. Prepare your campfire and let it burn down until you have a steady bed of hot coals.
  2. In a bowl, toss the apple slices with the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, cornflour, and salt.
  3. Set aside.
  4. In another bowl, mix oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Rub the butter into the dry mix using your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Layer the apple mixture in a cast iron skillet, foil tray, or heavy-duty foil pouch.
  7. Spread the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  8. Cover with foil (or a lid if using a skillet) and place over indirect heat on the coals.
  9. You can also place a few coals on top if using a Dutch oven or foil-covered pan.
  10. Cook for 25–30 minutes, or until apples are soft and the topping is golden and crisp.
  11. Carefully remove from the fire and let cool for a few minutes before serving.
