Chicken Shawarma
Craving takeout but want something homemade, healthier, and just as delicious? This is for you!
Ingredients:
For the chicken + marinade:
- 1 kg boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts
- 3 Tbsp plain yogurt
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1½ tsp ground cumin
- 1½ tsp ground paprika
- 1 tsp ground coriander
- 1 tsp ground turmeric
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp cayenne pepper
- 1½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
To serve:
- Warm pita bread or flatbread
- Garlic sauce or tahini sauce
- Sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, red onions
- Fresh parsley or mint (optional)
How To Make Chicken Shawarma
- In a large bowl or zip-top bag, mix all marinade ingredients until well combined.
- Add chicken and coat evenly.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight for maximum flavour.
- Preheat grill to medium-high.
- Grill chicken 5–7 minutes per side, or until nicely charred and fully cooked.
- Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly or chop into bite-sized pieces.
- Stuff sliced chicken into pita or wraps with your favourite toppings and drizzle with garlic sauce or tahini.
- Serve with rice or salad.
