
Daltjies/ Chili Bites
Cape Malay daltjies, also known as chili bites, a golden, crispy bite that is the perfect snack for any time!
Serves: 4 – 6
Preparation time: 10 – 12 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
- 1 cup chickpea flour
- ½ cup cake flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp crushed garlic
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
- ¼ cup chopped fresh coriander
- ½ cup finely grated carrot
- ½ cup finely chopped spinach
- ½ cup water (adjust for consistency)
- Oil for frying
How To Make Daltjies/ Chili Bites
- In a mixing bowl, combine the chickpea flour, cake flour, baking powder, cumin seeds, turmeric, and salt.
- Add the chopped onion, green chilies, coriander, garlic, grated carrot, and chopped spinach.
- Mix well.
- Gradually add water while stirring to form a thick batter.
- It should be smooth but not too runny.
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
- Drop spoonsful of batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
