Daltjies/ Chili Bites

Cape Malay daltjies, also known as chili bites, a golden, crispy bite that is the perfect snack for any time!

Serves: 4 – 6
Preparation time: 10 – 12 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chickpea flour
  • ½ cup cake flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp crushed garlic
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped (adjust to taste)
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh coriander
  • ½ cup finely grated carrot
  • ½ cup finely chopped spinach
  • ½ cup water (adjust for consistency)
  • Oil for frying

How To Make Daltjies/ Chili Bites

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the chickpea flour, cake flour, baking powder, cumin seeds, turmeric, and salt.
  2. Add the chopped onion, green chilies, coriander, garlic, grated carrot, and chopped spinach.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Gradually add water while stirring to form a thick batter.
  5. It should be smooth but not too runny.
  6. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  7. Drop spoonsful of batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
